A brief notice to draw attention to the happy occasion of the publication of the first book coming out of our Arabic and its Alternatives project, based on the papers of a conference organized in September 2013. I just repeat here what we wrote for the book’s cover: Modernity, Minority, and the Public Sphere: Jews and Christians in the Middle East explores the many facets associated with the questions of modernity and minority in the context of religious communities in the Middle East. Focusing on the Jewish and Christian communities and paying special attention to the concept of space and its influences on inter-communal dialogues and identity construction, this volume presents various examples of how religious communities were perceived and how they perceived themselves.

For this first time, I was able (thanks to project money from the Dutch grant organization NWO) to publish the volume Open Access. Many thanks to all the contributing authors for their exciting articles, to the editors of the LUCIS series for their willingness to take it into its series, to Brill for its efforts to get the book out this summer, to our language editor Valerie Joy Turner, to our assistant Farah Bazzi for her work on the index, and to my co-editor Sasha Goldstein Sabah for her hard work on the volume as a whole.
